This paper attempts to examine the drivers of female labor force participation in India. It and examines the relationship between economic or educational status of women’s (as an indicator of development) and their labor force participation at a given point of time in India. Using 66th round National Sample Survey (NSS) unit data our result suggests that, there is no consistent evidence of positive relationship between education of female and their probability of labor force participation. We find no evidence of social and cultural interaction effects that could explain the decline in female labour force participation in India. Intra-household inequality in terms of consumption, assets, family size, number of children below 5 years are the main determinant of low female labour force participation in India. Monthly per capita consumption expenditure (MPCE) (as another proxy of development or economic status) is shows a U-shaped relationship between development and female labour force participation.
