SCHOOLS OF ARCHITECTURE DEVELOPED IN NORTHERN AZERBAIJAN

With the Gülistan and Türkmençay treaties that were conducted between Russia and Iran in 1813 and 1828, the historical lands of Azerbaijan were split into two, and the land north of the Aras River became Russia’s while the land south went to Iran. This work aims to analyze the three schools of architecture (Arran, Nahçivan-Marağa and Şirvan-Abşeron) that developed under the influence in what is today Northen Azerbaijan after the spread of Islam into the region. This paper’s purpose is to investigate the reasons for the emergence of the architectural styles, as well as investigate the features, differences, and similarities between the aforementined styles and schools of architecture. Additionally, the paper aims to explain the architectural culture that culminates from the regions the individual architectural styles developed from.
