Notwithstanding their economic rise, the Jews in Argentina were seen as a repressed middle class until the 1980s. Today the myth of the middle class is partly true and partly illusion. The socioeconomic status of Argentine Jews underwent many changes after political democratization in the 1980s. New data on income level and political participation which was presented in the early 2000s, enable us to develop a different point of view about economic status. The objective of this paper is to examine the changes in socioeconomic status of the Jews in Argentina and to offer a new interpretation. In this paper, I analyze the demographic factors of Argentine Jews and the process in which Jews occupied an intermediate space in the economy from the early years of immigration to the 1980s. This makes it possible to define the new socioeconomic status of Argentine Jews according to the changing conditions of political participation, income level and influence in certain industries such as finance.
