Kazakhstan has been successfully building its market economy since gaining independence in 1991, and the potential for further development of small and medium-sized enterprises remains significant.
 
One of the major issues for small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) development has been access to finance. We examine the current state of SME development and financing in Kazakhstan. We also examine the current state of the development of value chains and discuss barriers for agriculture value chain financing as well as the key barriers to SMEs’ access to finance and suggest possible ways to overcome these in line with development of the value chains.
